Winchester looks like the kind of city you might expect to find in a fairytale picture book. Or perhaps even a novel penned by Jane Austin, who lies buried in the Winchester Cathedral. With its cobbled streets and bollards painted to resemble the works of Sonia Delaunay, Henri Matisse, Gustav Klimt and Jackson Pollock and others, this city has its own unique flair. Its annual Hat Fair, which has been celebrated annually since 1974, adds to Winchester’s whimsical charm. It was the awe-inspiring natural landscape between Winchester and Newbury that prompted Richard Adam’s to write his best-selling allegoric novel, Watership Down. The titular Watership Down, is based on a hill in the north of Hampshire.
